LOOKING through Carole and Alan Palmer’s home of 31 years, it is obvious how important it is to the family. As Carole told SUSAN GOODSON, they have always made sure they maintained it to a high standard because they value living in a nice environment

WHEN Carole and Alan Palmer first came across their home, it was still being built, but already had so much to offer that they wanted it then and there.

They hadn’t looked at many houses, but they knew what they wanted and it was in a part of town they wanted to move to and in a quiet cul-de-sac.

When they moved in about all they had to organise was a television aerial and a phone line.

In the time they have lived in the house the couple have raised two children, Sarah and David, and enjoyed a wonderful family home in a peaceful location with nice views.

The house - 6 Barwood Grove, Barrow - is a detached family home, with two reception rooms, a kitchen diner, utility room and WC, three good bedrooms and a family bathroom. Outside to the front is a block paved drive with parking for one car, access to the attached garage and a lawn front with brick/slab pathway. To the back is an enclosed garden which is easy to maintain. In the morning, through the kitchen window all Carole can hear is the sound of the birds flying in and out of the hedge by the house.

Situated in the popular Holbeck part of town, they have enjoyed it so much that they have stayed there for 31 years because Carole explained: “We love the house and the area so much”.

About 20 years ago the couple extended the house adding a entrance vestibule which has created a modern and light-filled introduction space to the house thanks to the double-glazed doors and side windows.

There is an oak effect laminate floor and doors lead to the lounge, ground floor cloaks and the kitchen diner. At the same time they extended to the back adding the utility room with a glass door leading to the back garden and what is a very versatile room they now call the study (a very generous-sized study).

In the past when the children were young it was a playroom but could easily be turned into a bedroom.

The study is another nice light room with field views of the original Holbeck Farm, and a glazed panel door leads to the lounge.

Carole said: “The kitchen diner has always been my favourite room because it is so light and airy and is a wonderful place for all the family or when we have friends around.

“No-one wants to be isolated in the kitchen while everyone else is in the dining room.

“Upstairs there are three good bedrooms and three years ago we got a Mike Hughes fitted bedroom with built-in wardrobes and it has lovely views.

“The second bedroom also has views while the third one looks out over the front of the house.”

The L-shaped bathroom has a modern three-piece suite in white, including a low level bath and over bath Mira electric shower. The loft is boarded and is insulated.

Outside to the back is a safe fenced and walled garden with a gate. It has a paved area, gravel path and surrounding borders.

Carole added: “I love gardening so we designed and created it ourselves. It is south facing so gets plenty of sun all day. At the front we have a paved drive so parking for one car and access to the garage which is attached.

“We have loved living here and have such good neighbours. We are also near very good schools, Yarlside Nursery and Infants, which are well thought of.

“The reason we are selling is that the children have grown-up and left home and we want to downsize, possibly in Ulverston.”
