AFTER spending a long spell of his career as a firefighter in Greater Manchester, George Davis was happy to come back to retire near his wife Mary’s home town. The couple had always loved visiting to catch up with family and enjoy the area. As he told SUSAN GOODSON, driving back from lunch one day he saw a house for sale and after viewing it could see how much potential it had and so they grabbed it

AFTER a chance purchase it was a year before George and Mary moved into their new home after turning their back on the city.

Since becoming owners in 1998 George has made quite a few changes.

An extension has added a lot more room to this beautifully maintained family home which has been redecorated to keep it fresh looking.

The house - High Banks, on the Coast Road, near Rampside - is a detached home with beautiful views over Morecambe Bay which has been well maintained throughout and is ready to move into.

There are four reception rooms (a lounge, living room, sun lounge and dining room), a kitchen, ground floor shower room, utility room, three good-sized bedrooms (one with en-suite) and a family bathroom. There is also front and back porches and a loft which is boarded and has lighting.

Outside to the front is a shared drive access with a deep-set garden front with stunning views over Morecambe Bay, off-road parking at the back and two private garages.

George loves the Coast Road location of his home and having the sea just over the road, but the setting of High Banks allows it to make the most of the stunning views.

Explaining about his home, George said: “It took a year of travelling back and forth before we moved in.

“We had the house replastered, pebbledashed and new doors and skirting boards fitted.

“The extension made the kitchen bigger and instead of just one bedroom we have three all upstairs, knocked through the lounge with an open arch to the living room and added the sunroom.”

While the third bedroom has open country views, the second looks out over the bay and the master goes one better and as well as bay views also has double glazed doors leading out to its own balcony.

George added: “About 10 years ago we changed the flat roof which I had never liked the look of. This is a proper family home and I love the beautiful views in the morning, but more than that, I have loved becoming part of village life.

“The people are so friendly and I even joined the village hall committee.

“It is so quiet and secluded.

“This is an ideal place for children with the beach so handy, there is a pitch and putt golf course and lots of lovely walks round the lanes.

“We are 40 minutes from Bowness but only a few minutes from Barrow, Roa Island, Rampside, Urswick, Gleaston and Leece.

“There are buses to both Ulverston and Barrow.”

George completely embraced life in the Coast Road community, but sadly two and a half years ago Mary died and now he is moving to Somerset to start a new chapter in his life.

The house - High Banks, Coast Road, Barrow - is on the market with Ross Estate Agencies for an asking price of £395,000. For further details or to arrange a viewing please call the agent on 01229 825636 or drop into the offices at 16 Cavendish Street, Barrow.
