'Our street is no war-zone', say Walney residents

RESIDENTS have passionately defended their street’s reputation after a neighbour claimed it was similar to a “war zone”.

A long-time homeowner in Silloth Crescent approached the Evening Mail following an armed police drugs raid on a property in the Walney street on July 27.

The resident, who asked to remain anonymous, claimed people’s lives were being affected by regular disruption in the street and claimed it was no coincidence six homes were up for sale.

But a group of neighbours were shocked and upset by the claims and contacted the Evening Mail to express how happy they are in the street, which they say is full of community spirit.

Robert Armstrong and partner Helen were offended by the “war zone” claim.

Mr Armstong said: “On that day, it might have looked like one, but it was a one-off.

“I moved in here when it was all just being built. From day one, it’s been a quiet area to live.

“We’ve brought our children up here – they’re 21 and 19 – and it’s just been a lovely place to live.

“That’s why we’ve never moved.

“It was a one-off incident. It has always been a quiet place to live and very friendly. We’ve had parties in the street and all sorts.”

Dave Melvin and partner Andrea said they had been made very welcome since their move to Silloth Crescent just over a year ago.

Mr Melvin said: “We’ve been here 14 months and have never seen any trouble whatsoever.

“It’s the most quiet place we’ve lived, and we’ve lived in three other places in the Barrow area.

“Before I moved in, I sound-proofed the party wall, just on the off chance (it would be noisy), and I needn’t have bothered. It’s absolutely perfect.

“You couldn’t meet a friendlier bunch.”

Another resident, who asked not to be named, said he knocked on doors and spoke to 15 neighbours who had not even been aware of the raid.

He said some residents were concerned negative claims could affect the value of their homes.

Mike Anderson, a resident of 25 years, added: “I’ve never experienced any problems.

“It’s very quiet and I’ve always been happy here.”
