Worldwide appeal made after theft of BMW sportscar in Barrow

TWO car thieves made off with a £19,000 sportscar after asking to take it for a test drive.
The pair, who spoke with Welsh accents and are believed to be in their mid 30s, took a black BMW 325d convertible, registration FY59 EAP, for a test drive from Knightsbridge Cars, in Roose Road, Barrow, only to vanish.
The theft took place on Thursday and police have said the car could be in use with different plates.
CCTV footage released by Knightsbridge Cars on social media site YouTube shows a woman and man entering the showroom.
Knightsbridge Cars was unavailable to comment on the theft but other dealers in the town have said this sort of incident isn’t unheard of.
Tony Dale, who runs Abbey Road Car Sales in Barrow, said thieves struck his business three years ago making off with a Ford C-Max.
He said: “It’s happened to me. A man came in with a child and said he’d take the child home and then take the car out. I thought oh, he must be in Barrow.
“The car was recovered two months later in West Mercia.
“There has got to be trust both ways but now we accompany all of our test drives.”
Jonny Stoker, sales manager at DSG in Barrow, said: “It’s not something I’ve experienced.
“More often than not we tend to go out with our test drives, not because of a lack of trust, but a lot of people are getting into a new car and if they have questions it’s the perfect opportunity to discuss them.”
One Barrow car dealer, who didn’t wish to be named, said: “I think any dealer would be wary so you do tend to try and find out as many details as possible.
“We would generally take a driving licence but even that can’t guarantee anything.”
Anyone with information, or who believes they may have seen the car, is asked to contact Barrow police on 101 or phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Have your say
Hopefully the guys at Knightsbridge either get the car back in same condition or they are able to claim on insurance.
The lads don't deserve this. They bring high quality cars to Barrow and are professional in all they do. I have had first hand experience of their professional service twice and there will be a third time when I am ready to change my vehicle again.
Good luck guys, hope you get a result.
I wouldn't trust a stranger enough to hand over a set of keys to one of my cars!
