Workman’s hole in road saturates Barrow pub’s cellar

A LANDLORD has hit out after flooding left him fearing for the safety of his pub.
David Healey found water soaking through the walls of his cellar during Wednesday afternoon’s torrential downpours, after a six-foot deep hole outside his property filled up.
Mr Healey, who owns Healey’s in Hindpool Road, Barrow, said the National Grid dug the hole to investigate a gas leak.
He said: “When it was pouring down, that hole filled up within an hour. It’s been left like that for two weeks now – it’s ridiculous.
“It should have been closed up ages ago and now it’s filling with water. If we have another bad day of rain, what’s going to happen?”
Mr Healey believes the pressure on his cellar walls could be a threat to the foundations of the pub if more rain leads to more water coming through.
His son, Adam, is re-rendering the walls in a bid to give their property more protection.
But the landlord of 29 years said this was not the first time works have wreaked havoc with his business.
Mr Healey said: “Every time they dig that road up, water comes through my cellar and it floods. I’ve complained about it loads of times.’’
A spokesman for the National Grid said: “We needed to leave the excavation open to ventilate a minor gas escape. This is a safe and standard procedure and in such instances we regularly visit the site to carry out monitoring until a permanent repair has been carried out. Specialist repairs are scheduled for later this month and the excavation has been partly filled in, although it cannot be fully reinstated until the required repairs have been completed as we need to continue venting the gas escape. We have spoken with the resident and are arranging for the damage caused by the rainwater to be repaired.
“The water ingress was largely the result of the kerb’s edging being removed – this would normally have diverted the rainwater to the drains.
“To prevent such an incident happening again we have arranged for the kerb edgings to be placed back in position. We apologise for any inconvenience this incident has caused.”

My name is Adam healey son of the landlord of healeys they have filled one side of the hole and placed the kerb edges back in place they have filled the opposite side of the hole to the pub not the side that is lettin water into our cellar it rained again today and again the hole filled with water and started coming through our walls again as they havent sealed the kerb sections so the water is just running through them into the gold and as the side closest to our building is still open it is just flying through our walls causing more damage to very old foundations when will something be done about ground water coming through our walls maybe when it collapses ???? That cellar has always been bone dry as it was a working cellar for many years and has only been letting water in since there have been service excavations around the building maybe one day someone will claim responsibility for all of the waters coming through our walls and damaging our foundations
