Work begins on Cumbrian road improvements
Last updated at 17:54, Wednesday, 06 March 2013
WORK has began on a £30,000 project to install a new safety barrier along a section of the A590.
By Gareth Jones
The five day Highways Agency project at Backbarrow, along the dual carriageway section of the route between the junctions with the B5278 for Haverthwaite and Levis Garth, will be taking place between 8am and 6pm on each of the five days.
The work began today and will be completed by Sunday.
The nearside barrier serving the eastbound carriageway will be replaced as part of the scheme.
Due to the location of the barriers, the work will require temporary traffic lights being used on the single carriageway section of the road west of the dual carriageway to manage eastbound and westbound traffic past the roadworks.
To minimise inconvenience to drivers, the arrangements on the single carriageway section of the route will only be in place during off-peak hours between 9.30am and 3.30pm each day. The temporary traffic lights will be also be manually operated to prevent needless queuing.
The nearside lane of the eastbound dual carriageway will be also be closed – between 8am and 6pm each day - and a reduced, 40mph speed limit will be in place for the safety of road users as well as roadworkers.
Highways Agency project sponsor Peter Gee said: “The barrier is in is poor condition and, as part of our routine maintenance along the A590, we are replacing it with a new barrier up to present standards which will enhance protection for users of the of the route.”
