Witness tells of window plummet

THE manager of a homecare agency has told how a woman who plummeted from a third floor window “landed at her feet”.
Michelle Geldart said she was lucky to have escaped unhurt when the woman narrowly missed her after falling from a window in Rawlinson Street, Barrow, on Thursday afternoon.
Mrs Geldart, who manages the Twilight Years care agency, said she walked on to the pavement outside the office to pick up a curtain that had fallen from the flat a few seconds before the woman came tumbling out as well.
“I went out to pick up the curtain and see what on earth was going on,” said Mrs Geldart, 32.
“As I was stepping back through the door she landed at my feet.
“If I had taken a step forward she might have landed on me and I could have been in hospital too.”
Police said the woman, in her 30s, had fallen about 30ft from the window of a flat above the office.
Mrs Geldart and two other members of staff from Twilight Years, along with passers-by, kept the woman warm and tried to keep her conscious until an ambulance arrived about five or 10 minutes later.
“It was quite a shock,” Mrs Geldart said.
“We just wanted to make sure she was warm and make sure she remained conscious.
“She was conscious but she was not speaking.
“I have no idea what happened and what made her come out of the window, I just wish her a full recovery.”
Mrs Geldart said she wanted to make clear that the flat the woman fell from was not owned by Twilight Years.
Yesterday, police said the woman who fell from th window was in a serious condition in Furness General Hospital in Barrow after breaking “most bones in her body.”
The woman had been intoxicated at the time and no-one else was being sought in connection with what happened, a spokeswoman said.
