Windermere to host first ever festive swim

THE first official festive open water swim will take place in the Lake District on Boxing Day, with swimmers having to endure temperatures of -5°C.

The Chillswim Dip will take place at the Lake District National Park Visitor Centre in Windermere at 11am.

The event features a mass start and there are no age limits on the day.

Director of Chillswim, Colin Hill, said: “We are really excited about hosting the Lake District’s first ever official Boxing Day dip at Brockhole.

“Combining festive fun and open water swimming in the beautiful and iconic English Lakes really couldn’t be better and is bound to make this Christmas really memorable for those that dare to take the plunge.

“We look forward to the Boxing Day dip becoming established as one of the must do Boxing Day swims in the coming years.”

Registration on the day will open at 10am, although you can register in advance at chillswim.com.

It costs £6 to dip on the day and fancy dress is encouraged.

Cold water swimming has a long tradition in the UK, with classics like the The Peter Pan Cup taking place in the Serpentine, London, on Christmas Day.
