STUDENTS impressed audiences with their toe-tapping performances of a popular stage and screen musical.

Walney School staged the romantic comedy, Hairspray , from July 11 to 13, as its summer production. Some 40 students were involved in the cast, backstage and as part of the technical crew.

Students had been busy rehearsing for the show since the start of the year. Walney School has a very strong tradition for producing excellent shows and this year was no exception.

Hairspray is set in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1962. It follows teen Tracy, played by Megan Bradley, as she pursues stardom as a dancer on a local TV show and fights against racial segregation. Tracy's mum, Edna, is played by Ben Sibbitt and ex-student Keiran McCormack appeared as Link, Tracy's love interest. Shauna Holmes played Tracy's rival, Amber, while Hannah Cheshire took on the role of Velma, Amber's mum.

Pupils from South Walney Junior School were treated to a preview afternoon of the show, which has many memorable songs, including You Can't Stop the Beat . Walney School has thanked everyone who supported the show and their talented students.
