CHILDREN as young as seven will be taking part in the Coniston to Barrow walk as part of the fundraising team for Vickerstown Primary School.

You might think the 21-mile trek will be too much for the little walkers, but team co-ordinator Amy Singleton is confident they will take it in their stride.

“We have 12 children in the team, ranging from 7-10, and they are all very determined. My daughter, Erin, is nine and this will be her third time.

“The first thing thing they will do when they finish is go on the bouncy castle,” she said.

The Friends of Vickerstown team will also have 18 adults trying to keep up with the younger competitors, including parents, teachers and relatives of people connected with the school.

Parents and grandparents will be out in force along the route and there also be a Vickerstown marshal point in Dalton, to offer encouragement in the final stages.

“The atmosphere on the day will be tremendous and that always gives you a boost. It’s been a good challenge for the children and everyone to get involved in,” Amy said.

The youngest team members will be seven-year-olds William Jones-Barnes and Harlie Chattaway.

William’s mum, Laura, has been out with him on walks since early February, building up to the big day and documenting the fun they’ve had on Instagram and Twitter.

Together, Laura and William have already clocked up 117 miles on their training walks around Dalton and Barrow, which often include a stop off for a treat at somewhere like the Abbey Mill cafe.

“I think that if we are not ready now, we will never be. William has really enjoyed it and, apart from one or two moans, has shown a really good attitude, especially when it comes to completing some of the longer walks,” said Laura, who admits to being something of a Parkrun fanatic as well as clocking up to K2B walks.
