EVERYTHING is ready to roll at a Walney bowling club after a councillor paid to have its old pavilion spruced up in time for the new season.

The pavilion at the King Alfred Bowling Club was badly in need of an upgrade, so towards the end of last summer greenkeeper Keith Mills asked Councillor Frank Cassidy if he could help out with the £2,300 cost.

Cllr Cassidy met the cost of the work, which has now been completed, and everything is ready for the new season, which starts on March 25.

Cllr Cassidy, a Labour councillor who represents Walney South on Cumbria County Council, said: “Every county councillor receives an allowance to be spent in his or her division on a worthwhile community project so, when Keith asked me about helping, there wasn’t really a decision to make.

“The King Alf isn’t just a bowling club – it’s an important community hub that has more than 100 members and there are a lot of young players learning their trade here as well.

“On a summer’s day this little corner of Walney is one of the nicest places to be in the whole borough. The green is Keith’s pride and joy and many members give up their own time to do jobs around the place.

“It’s just nice to be able to make a contribution and to see the pavilion back in good shape in time for the start of the season.”

Mr Mills said: “It is really fantastic to see the pavilion restored thanks to Frank.

“This should give the building a new lease of life, hopefully for the next 20 to 30 years.

“We have been updating slowly for the past few years and our facilities are second to none and we are all looking forward to the start of a new season.”
