THREE controlled explosions were carried out on a beach on Walney this morning to dispose of ordnance found in a shipyard.

Furness Coastguard were paged at 09.34am to assist Cumbria police and the Royal Logistic Corps Bomb Disposal squad in destroying the items.

A cordon was put in place by Furness Coastguard to protect members of the public as a plume of black smoke erupted from the piece of ordnance following the explosions.

The remains were then taken away and disposed of accordingly.

The ordnance had first been found by BAE Systems on Saturday afternoon as police temporarily closed Cornmill Crossing near B&Q in Barrow as a precaution.
