FIREFIGHTERS were called to rescue a horse which has become stranded in a field on Walney.

The call to Barrow fire came in at around 8.45am this morning to a field off Carr Lane on Walney.

A horse appeared to be stranded in a muddy area of the field.

A vet had been called and was in attendance.

Station manager Roger Exley confirmed at 9.55am that sadly the horse had been put to sleep by the vet.

"The horse appeared to have been there for some time, and was quite old," Mr Exley said.

"We have to follow the vet's lead in such cases."
