A MUM from Walney has shared the tragic story of her late daughter with experts as part of her campaign to raise awareness of a rare heart condition.

At a conference on cardiomyopathy, Walney mum Angela Herdman addressed consultants, doctors, GPs and midwives from across the country about the death of 26-year-old Carly Scott,  who died just days after giving birth to her first child.

Delegates were moved to tears as they listened to Mrs Herdman talk about new mum Carly, a senior planner at BAE Systems, and the symptoms she had displayed but which were not recognised in the days before she died of the condition in 2012.

Mrs Herdman, of Dominion Street, said she hoped learning about Carly's story would ensure medics were able to spot signs of cardiomyopathy in other women as quickly as possible in a bid to save their lives.

She said: "It was difficult to tell Carly's story to so many people but I just had to steal myself to do it to get the message out there about cardiomyopathy.

"When I looked up there were lots of people in tears.

"They said afterwards that hearing Carly's story is something that will always stay with them which I'm really happy about.

"Lives will be saved - that's Carly's legacy."

Mrs Scott, of Barnard Street, Barrow, experienced a number of symptoms of cardiomyopathy - including breathlessness, fainting and cold feet - but she died days after giving birth to her son George at Furness General Hospital four years ago.

Mrs Herdman, who is an ambassador for Cardiomyopathy UK, has now been asked to speak at two more conferences on the condition that affects the heart muscle and is worsened during pregnancy.

She also raised £450 in donations during the special event, organised jointly by staff within the trust that runs FGH and Cardiomyopathy UK, to help continue her campaign to make more doctors and maternity staff aware of the importance of spotting the signs as soon as they appear.
