WALNEY students who were shaking as they opened their GCSE results breathed a sigh of relief as they took in their stunning achievements.

Amy Henry was taken aback by her three A*s, five As, a B and a C gained at Walney School.

She was then shocked to see that her set of top grades included achieving full marks in one area of English language and being one mark off full marks in history.

The stunned teen, who also celebrates her 16th birthday this week, said: "I'm ecstatic. I worked so hard for my results.

"I was very nervous about picking up my results.

"I enjoyed school, it was good and the teachers were supportive."

Amy heads to Barrow Sixth Form College and then she is interested in doing a higher apprenticeship at BAE Systems.

Deputy head girl Emily Carr achieved two A*s, four As and three Bs.

She has secured a mechanical engineering apprenticeship at GSK Ulverston.

Emily said: "I'm happy. I was nervous before and then I felt relieved.

"I had good support to get my grades."

Also among the high achievers with a collection of A* and As were Abbi McLaughlan, Devon Bell and Nicole White.

Headteacher John Richardson said: "There are stunning individual performances from the students for their hard work and the hard work of staff.

"We have seen the highest ever proportion of students going on to further education in line with raising aspirations for students. There is also a broader range of destinations."

Mr Richardson said initial indicators suggest that the headline figures of students achieving five good qualifications, including English and maths, is up 10 per cent on last year. There are new measures this year and schools are waiting to see what the final measures look like.
