A CALENDAR showcasing spectacular scenes from an island will support good causes.

The Walney Island Calendar 2017 features stunning landscape photographs from around the island taken by Philip Hatfield.

Mr Hatfield, who runs Island Portrait Studio, in Douglas Street, Walney, has once again teamed up with Mill Lane Post Office to produce the calendar, sales of which will help good causes.

The photographer reintroduced an island calendar a couple of years ago with former sub-postmaster Ingrid Guy. He is now working with Marianne Livesey who took over the running of the post office.

The calendars cost £6.49 and they get sent around the world to ex-pat Walneyites.

Mr Hatfield has captured some remarkable images from different parts of the island, including moonrise above the lighthouse at South Walney and a sunset at Earnse Bay.

He said: "I gather there are many ex-pat islanders living all over the world who enjoyed receiving the calendars for Christmas.

"This year’s moonrise photograph over the lighthouse was pure luck. I had the camera gear in the car while travelling back to the studio over Jubilee Bridge and saw the moon coming up. I headed to South End Caravan Park and it resulted in this picture. The hard part was timing the shot to include the lighthouse flash which only lasts for a fraction of a second.

"The breakwater at Earnse Bay on the cover and the big sky image, also from Earnse, were taken with one of my favourite lenses, the Nikon 16mm super-wideangle fisheye lens, and are good examples of the fantastic light that can be experienced later in the day."

Another of this year's photographs shows Walney roof tops, Biggar Bank and Walney Wind Farm which was taken from the Barrow Town Hall clock tower with a 400mm telephoto lens on Mr Hatfield's 60th birthday.
