IMAGES which show huge piles of discarded bottles, cans and litter at a Walney beauty spot have been described as "truly disheartening" by a walker.

The pictures, taken by Carl Fearn, were taken yesterday afternoon at the North Walney Nature Reserve.

Mr Fearn described the find as "an absolute disgrace" and has sent the pictures to Natural England.

He said: "It's shocking and truly disheartening.

"There is at least 200 metres of beach and dune strip where there are literally hundreds of empty cans, bottles – many broken, and campfires with half burnt rubbish around them.

"It is an absolute disgrace. It has been that way for several weeks now."

North Walney Nature Reserve is one of the sites in the Duddon Estuary which support one fifth of the national population of rare amphibian, the natterjack toad.

The reserve is also part of the Duddon Estuary Site of Special Scientific Interest.
