BAE Systems is set to replace the roundabout leading onto Walney's Jubilee Bridge with three-way traffic lights.

The changes are part of the shipyard's redevelopment programme and will see the roundabout in Bridge Road at the end of Jubilee Bridge replaced with a three-way set of traffic lights. The roundabout exit onto Burnaby Street on Barrow Island will be removed from the junction.

The entrance into the Devonshire Dock Hall site from the A590 will be removed as part of the road changes. It is understood the works relating to the traffic lights alone will cost £21,500 - which will be met by BAE.

Barrow Borough Council granted planning permission as part of BAE Systems' £300m site redevelopment.

The project has been introduced to enhance the capabilities of the existing facility to prepare for the construction of the Successor, the replacement for the Vanguard class.

To enable this, BAE Systems has proposed a number of projects to help it produce the 18,000 ton nuclear submarines.

The projects include a large warehouse facility at Dova Way at the docks, an extension to the Devonshire Dock Hall, a new Central Yard building and a number of car parks and office blocks.
