A MAN was arrested amid claims he had tried to send cannabis via Royal Mail.

The suspect is said to have gone into a Co-op store, which also houses a Post Office bureau, with a parcel.

But staff raised the alarm over what they believed to be a suspicious smell coming from the package.

Officers attended and arrested the man on suspicion of possession of the class B drug with intent to supply.

The alleged incident happened at the Co-op in Plymouth Street, Walney at around 2pm on Wednesday.

A spokesman for Cumbria Constabulary said: "Officers received a call at 2.15pm yesterday (22 Feb) to attend the Co-op/Post Office in Plymouth Street, Barrow.

"Officers attended and detained a 26-year-old man from the Barrow area at 2.21pm. The man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply cannabis."

The man has been released on police bail pending further investigations.
