SKILLS which can make the difference between life or death were put to practice as members of the Furness Coastguard took part in a training exercise.

Last night team members took to the Walney Channel to run through a mud rescue exercise.

Equipped with wet weather gear and rescue sledges designed to glide over wet mud and sand, members of the team performed a mock-rescue.

The team went through this procedure to prepare one of their newest members for an upcoming assessment, which will see them fully qualified as a mud rescue technician. Another member also took part to re-qualify as a technician.

The hard work did not stop after they'd escaped from the mud. Their gear had to be cleaned and fully decontaminated, ready for their next call out.
