POLICE have said no further action will be taken against a Barrow man who abandoned his car on Walney beach.

Barrow firefighters were called out on Monday morning after a Citroen was seen floating in the sea at Earnse Bay.

Members of the public alerted the emergency service at around 8.45am, not knowing if there was anyone inside the silver car at the time.

It was ascertaining that nobody was trapped in the vehicle and the fire and coastguard did not need to carry out a rescue.

Cumbria Police contacted the owner who told them that the car got stuck on Monday and it had to be abandoned.  The car had then washed into the sea.

Cumbria police said the owner, a Barrow man, had said he was making arrangements to recover the vehicle from the beach. As a result, no further action was being taken against him.

The police and the fire service have reminded people not to drive vehicles onto the beach. The fire service said any abandoned vehicles should be reported to the police by the owners.

Barrow Police Sergeant Leanne Clark Said: “We are urging members of the public not to drive on the beach at Walney Island as this is extremely dangerous. This can result in your car getting damaged and stuck. There is appropriate parking that can be used in this area to avoid such incidents happening again.”

Roger Exley, Barrow station manager for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said people should not be driving onto the beach because of the dangers around vehicles getting stuck, and then the safety and environmental issues with vehicles being left on the sands.

Mr Exley also said: "If something like this does happen the owner should report it to the police that the car is stuck and that there is none in the vehicle."

In July last year Barrow Borough Council went through an abandoned vehicle procedure to be able to remove a Renault Megane car that was stranded at Earnse Bay for more than two and half weeks.
