A new Walney music festival proved to be a success and attracted a crowd of around 200 people.

The first Tarnfest took place at Tarn House, Mill Lane, on August bank holiday Monday and featured acts including Becki Fishwick and The Hairy Buskers.

The staff at Tarn House, a service for adults with learning disabilities, organised the event for service users, families, friends and the local community.

Support worker, Chrissie Crampton, had suggested the idea after watching a BBC clip on Facebook about a music festival for adults with learning disabilities, and the idea was popular with service users and staff.

Social media was then used to rally volunteer musicians from the local community who then kindly gave up their time on a bank holiday to perform.

A truck was hired to use as a stage and free hay bales were donated from a local farm for seating.

Jamie Broome compered the event and donated the use of his equipment. The acts also included Jonny Wildfire, Alan Miller, Talia Rae Brumbley and Winter Hill.

Service users designed posters for the event and they also made soap, which was sold on the day. Friends from Chatsworth Crafts Day Service helped by making handmade stage signs.

Clare Strange, the manager of Tarn House, said: "As the day approached the weather forecast didn’t look good and as we were setting up in the wind and rain, but the sun came and so did the crowds. Around 200 people from the local community came to watch.

"The day was a huge success, service users, friends, family and the local community all had a fab day. We have already started planning for TarnFest 2018, Barrow’s first music festival for people with disabilities."
