POLICE have released more description details about a Christmas Day sex assault suspect as an extensive search of the surrounding area takes place.

A woman in her 50s was sexually assaulted on a public footpath around the fields off Solway Drive, Walney, between 4.30pm ad 4.45pm on Christmas Day.

The woman bravely fought off the man who had approached the victim from the side. He then fled, possibly in the direction of North Scale. The victim was very badly shaken and sustained a minor injury. Police said she is receiving appropriate support from specialist officers.

Police are appealing for information from the public who may have seen the suspect in this area, which is very popular with dog walkers, and from those who can identify him. They are also following up information already received through the appeal.

Barrow CID said that the man was understood to be under the influence of alcohol and that it was noted that his front teeth were in a very poor dental condition.

The suspect has been described as being white, in his early 20s, around 5ft 7in and of medium build. He was wearing dark jogging bottoms and a similarly dark-coloured hooded top.

An extensive search of the scene and surrounding area took place today with officers and police dogs. Police were also continuing to speak to residents.

Detective Sergeant Mike Wallace, of Barrow CID and who is leading the investigation, said: "Extensive inquiries will continue today. We are speaking to residents in the area and a more extensive search of the scene and the surrounding area is also taking place today.

"I can confirm further to the description already circulated, the male suspect was also believed to be under the influence of alcohol and it was noted that his front teeth were in poor dental condition.

"We are continuing to support and update the victim, and I can assure residents that there will be a continued visible police presence in the area over the next 48 hours.

"If anyone has any relevant information as to the possible identity of the suspect I would urge them to make contact with Barrow CID by calling 101, or by calling Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
