RESIDENTS across South Cumbria are being advised not to be spooked by the sound of gunshots.

The Ministry of Defence has issued a public notice to warn residents that firing will be carried out at the Eskmeals gun range on Tuesday November 1.

The legal notice states firing may take place between the hours of 8am and 6pm.

The notice warns everyone to stay clear of the foreshore during these times. During firing boundary flags will be raised and red lights displayed.

Back in March, the Evening Mail was contacted by a number of residents across Barrow and Walney who had reported feeling 'tremors'.

One resident initially reported the tremors near to Barrow Cemetery while others claim to have felt them on Walney. Others have reported the phenomena across the whole of Barrow, including Holbeck, Furness General Hospital, Barrow Park, Red River and Hawcoat.

After examining a number of possible explanations, including piling or construction work offshore or at the shipyard, and after speaking to the operators of Stainton Quarry and Burlington Slate, the Evening Mail understands the 'tremors' were gunfire from the Eskmeals Gun Range in West Cumbria.

The legal notice states firing may take place between the hours of 8am and 6pm.
