CREWS tackled a large grass and gorse fire on Walney in the early hours of this morning.

Firefighters found the gorse well alight on arrival at Tummer Hill, Ocean Road, just after midnight.

The Walney crew attended the incident, and due to poor water supplies and the fire spreading the Barrow crew were called in to assist.

Three hose reel jets and beaters were used to put out the flames.

Once the fire was under control the Walney crew remained on scene to dampen hotspots and any flare ups by ferrying water from a nearby hydrant.

It has been a busy week for the Furness fire crews with them tackling the major blaze at Salthouse Mills and rescuing a woman from a smoke-filled flat at Raglan Court flat on Tuesday, and crews returning to Salthouse Mills on Wednesday.
