WEEDS reaching up to three-feet in height have led to residents across Barrow and Walney to complain to council bosses as pictures show pavements blighted by unwelcome green guests.

A series of photographs sent in by disgusted resident Ian Singleton shows overgrown weeds littered along a number of streets on Walney including Empress Drive.

Mr Singleton said: "I have recently posted on Facebook the state of Empress Drive with weeds growing up to 3ft tall and had a huge reaction from Facebook followers stating it is the same all over town.

"What are we paying our council tax for, it is an absolute disgrace."

Lots more residents have since come forward to highlight hotspots in the town, with some saying Barrow "looks abandoned" while others compare it to a scene from Jumanji.

Cumbria County Council's highways department is responsible for maintaining pavements and grass verges.

The council's website states: "Growth of weeds is generally prevented by weed spraying, but individual problems are dealt with by specific action."

After one resident, Wayne Cosh, complained to the county council, he received a response which vowed that the weeds would be tackled.

Mr Cosh said: "It's a total disgrace. High weeds and grass are all over Barrow Island."

In an email, seen by the Evening Mail, a highways network engineer told Mr Cosh: "Unfortunately (Barrow) Borough Council decided in April to abandon all weed spraying in the Barrow area.

"Cumbria Highways have in their stead started weed spraying last week throughout the district.

"This programme has started in Barrow town centre and will target the main routes through Barrow, Dalton and Askam. This will be followed by a programme of work extending to all urban streets in the district."

The Evening Mail has approached the county council for a response.
