VOLUNTEER crew from the RNLI's Barrow station launched their inshore lifeboat today to go to the aid of a boat which had broken down off Walney.

The request to launch the lifeboat came from Holyhead Coastguard at 10.41am.

The information received was that a 16' day boat with two people on board had suffered engine failure whilst at sea, just to the south of Walney Lighthouse.

The inshore lifeboat, Vision of Tamworth, was launched at 10.58am with two RNLI crew on board.

The inshore lifeboat made good progress to the scene and was alongside the stricken boat at 11.10am.

After an assessment of the situation, the decision was taken to attach a line and tow the boat back to the Ferry pitchings on Walney Island where it arrived just before midday.

Once the casualty vessel was secure and the crew were safely ashore, the lifeboat returned back to the lifeboat station where it was made ready for the next launch.

The weather conditions at the time of the incident were fine and sunny, with a light westerly breeze.
