Walney body builder honour

A PROMISING bodybuilder with legs as wide as many people’s waists is destined for the top after tasting success in a prestigious competition.

Kade Kendall overcame 19 competitors from across the country to win the National Amateur Body-Builders’ Association Mr Britain novice class.

A roofer working with his dad, David Kendall, by day, the 25-year-old was one of the youngest ever winners in the category.

To get into optimum shape, the dad-of-one, of Biggar Bank, Walney, followed a strict 22-week diet and gruelling training regime alongside his full-time job.

Mr Kendall, whose waistline measures 34 inches when he is off dieting, said he wanted to change the often negative perception of bodybuilders in Furness and demonstrate how it is a sport that demands unbelievable levels of focus and determination.

His victory in Southport on June 2 followed disappointment in a competition two years ago when he failed to place in the finals.

“From the moment I got off the stage then to winning this one, for two years I knew which body parts I had to work and where I needed to put size on,” said Mr Kendall.

“So to actually get to the finals and for it all to come off, well it was emotional to say the least. I’m 100 per cent focused and there is nothing I want more.

“I want to push myself to be the best bodybuilder I can be. If that’s being a professional, then by all means I’ll keep going.

“But as long as I’m healthy and keep enjoying the sport, that’s the main thing and I’ll drive myself to the top.”

Veteran bodybuilder Keith Devlin, owner of Evolution Gym in Barrow, has watched Mr Kendall thrive and believes he can make the grade at the very top of bodybuilding as a professional.

Mr Devlin, 60, said: “He’s always been a big lad. His dad (David Kendall) played rugby for Barrow RL, so it’s genetic on that side of things, but in the build-up you could see the change in him week-by-week. He could go all the way and the judges at the show were making the same type of complements about him, especially for his age.

“His legs are like most people’s waist. I said you need to stop training your legs so hard because you’re starting to lose your body balance. He’s got so much potential, it’s unbelievable.”
