Black Combe beacon burns bright
Published at 14:23, Thursday, 07 June 2012
MORE than 60 revellers hiked to the top of Black Combe to watch the lighting of the Jubilee beacon.
After a last minute cancellation and reinstatement, the beacon celebrations carried on long in to the night, with the last party-goers reportedly leaving at 3am.
The beacon lighting had initially been cancelled due to concern over fire risk. But a good downpour in the days immediately before helped lower the risk sufficiently to allow the event to go ahead.
Robert Morris-Eyton, chairman of the Black and White Combe Graziers, had the privilege of lighting the beacon, along with friend and farmer Jim Capstick.
Mr Morris-Eyton said: “It was a fantastic night. The visibility was spectacular.
“The beacon flames were probably 20 to 30ft high.
“I was up there for the silver jubilee, when it was a wet, miserable night. We thought we ought to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee too.
“Black Combe has been used for beacons over the centuries and it would have been a shame not to have done it this time.”
