Vision for South Lakeland unveiled in three-year plan

A NEW three-year area plan setting out the county council’s local priorities, challenges and achievements in South Lakeland has been approved by councillors.

Cumbria County Council’s South Lakeland Local Committee today agreed to adopt the 2014-17 South Lakeland Area Plan – a document setting out the range of services that the council will be delivering in the district at a time of budget cuts.

The Area Plan states that the focus in South Lakeland during 2014-17 will be:

- Promoting sustainable economic growth and creating jobs;

- Improving educational achievement;

- Improving health and well-being and tackling poverty;

- Providing safe and well maintained roads and an effective transport network.

The plan also sets out projects that the county council is supporting and committed to delivering across the district over the next three years, including investing £3 million in Ulverston Victoria High School by remodelling and refurbishing the school to provide a modern learning environment, setting up a health and well-being forum and completing the roll-out of superfast broadband.

Councillor Geoff Cook, chair of Cumbria County Council’s South Lakeland Local Committee, said: “The council is delivering a broad range of services and we will continue to do this despite facing the challenges of a reduced budget.

“We are continually listening to the issues, concerns and ideas raised by our communities, and these will inform the shape of services delivered by the county council in South Lakeland.”
