School bus fire on A590 in South Cumbria

A COACH which had been carrying schoolchildren caught fire on the A590 in South Cumbria.

Pupils and teachers from Sir John Barrow Primary School, Ulverston, evacuated the broken down Travellers Choice coach before the fire.

The school party got off the bus at Rusland Pool, Haverthwaite, and no-one was hurt.

The group then got a replacement bus back to school.

Crews from Ulverston and Grange were called out just after 5.15pm, and they extinguished the fire.

Headteacher Helen Pemberton said: "All the children have got home safely. The situation was dealt with very well."

Have your say

After reading tonights EM 20 June can I ask what was the problems that the driver noticed that made him decide to pull into the layby.

I would also like to say a big thank you to all the teachers and helpers who got the children off the coach and across the busy A590 before the fire started.
