Up to 200 job losses feared at Barrow gun factory

A consultation period has started which could see the loss of 200 jobs at a Barrow gun factory.
BAE Systems' Weapons Teams staff were told of a 45-day statutory consultation process this morning.
Around 350 people work at the plant and night shifts were cancelled this week with workers told to attend at meeting at the site at 10.30am this morning when an announcement on future plans were made.
A BAE spokesman said: "We are beginning consultation with trade unions and other employee representatives on the proposed suspension of the M777 howitzer production line at its Barrow facility which could potentially result in up to 200 job losses.
"The move comes about because of on-going delays in the US Government Foreign Military Sale of 145 M777 howitzers to the Government of India. After months of company investment, and with production on existing orders nearing completion, the company can no longer continue to maintain the current staffing levels.
"There could be some mitigation of the proposed suspension in production and potential reductions, if a formal agreement for the M777 howitzer sale to India were to be reached in the near future. However, the company has reached the point where it has to begin this consultation process."
The company’s US Hattiesburg facility, which is responsible for final integration and test of the M777, is not immediately affected by this announcement.
“The company greatly appreciates the hard work and dedication of our employees on the M777 howitzer production line in Barrow,” added Erwin Bieber, president of BAE Systems’ Land & Armaments sector.
“The decision to enter into consultation in no way reflects upon their work and dedication. We will seek to mitigate any potential job losses wherever possible.”

Have your say
So what has our sitting MP & our beloved council leaders got to say about this Con, that will hit our town yet again? & in case the NWEM thinks there is some sort personal reason why I keep asking questions, that they dont wish to put to MR Woodcock? I ask exactly the same question to the Tories, who have also done nothing to help & support our community from there entrenched positions!
