SEEKING PARENTS’ OPINIONS: Right, Bernadette Calvey, headteacher of Ulverston Church of England Infant School

Ulverston Church of England Infant School, in Church Walk, hopes to launch a consultation on the possibility of expanding to become a primary school.

Parents of children at the school were informed last week of the proposals and asked for their initial views.

Headteacher Bernadette Calvey said: “The school is currently considering whether to begin consultation on changing its age range to become a primary school.

“I wrote to parents on Friday asking for their views as to whether we should move to a formal consultation process.

“There is also a meeting for parents being held at the school next Monday to discuss this further.

“Moving to become a primary school would give parents in Ulverston the choice of a Church of England school up to age 11.

“But before doing anything formal, we want to get a general idea of parents’ views.

“It’s early days and it may come to nothing but we want to start a conversation with parents now to see how they feel.”

Currently, the nearest Church of England primary schools are in Pennington, Great Urswick and Penny Bridge.

Reverend Alan Bing, who sits on the school board of governors, said he felt the move would benefit parents.

The change, he suggested, will make it easier for parents who want to keep their children in a Church of England school for the whole of their primary education.

He said: “Obviously it is helpful for parents if they can have their children at the same school right through to 11.”

He also said other schools in Ulverston had successfully madethe transition to become primary schools.

“We are hopeful people will see it as a good way forward for theschool and the town generally,” he added.

“We are very supportive of the idea and we think it is the best way forward.

“We hope it will be favourably received.”
