DEVELOPERS have criticised Ulverston Town Council for voting against controversial plans for a supermarket at the former Robinsons brewery site – but still refuse to say who would occupy it.

The application for a 19,000sq ft store came under fire at Monday’s council meeting, with councillors unwilling to support the plans without knowing which company would operate it.

But developers say the end-user is irrelevant.

A statement issued on behalf of Robinsons says the proposed development will enhance the vitality and viability of the town centre, while respecting Ulverston’s character.

A spokesman said: “The name of the supermarket operator should not be relevant to the determination of the planning application.

“We have worked with top-four supermarkets to satisfy them that the proposed development is suitable for their needs.”

Developers also say they have worked closely with a number of organisations – including English Heritage, the Highways Agency and both the county and district councils – to make sure the plans are suitable.

While a number of residents spoke against the application on Monday night, planners say the concerns raised have been adequately addressed.

They claim the scheme will bring improvements to Brewery Street and Union Street, as well as resurfacing of the Buxton Place and Brewery Street car parks.

The statement adds that the development could be the catalyst for major new investment in Ulverston town centre, and create more than 200 jobs.

South Lakeland District Council’s planning committee will now decide whether or not to follow the town council’s recommendation.
