Ulverston students compete at Cumbria poetry competition

PUPILS from Ulverston Victoria High School took part in a Cumbria wide poetry competition.

Two students from UVHS took on pupils from Cockermouth School in the contest organised by Cumbria County Council's library service designed to encourage children to learn poems by heart.

The teams won the right to compete in the county final at Kendal Library on Thursday after a round of local school competitions.

Students recited two poems from the 200 available and also recited a World War One poem from the 2014 showcase collection on the poetry by heart website.

Following the recitals, scores were totalled and the county winner was announced as Hannah Lewis, who is in Year 12 at Cockermouth School.

Runner-up was Ben Lewis of UVHS, who was just one point behind.
