Ulverston farmer’s first lambs of the season

FROM bundles of hay to bundles of joy – one Ulverston farmer is being kept especially busy at the moment.

Father-of-three Will Case knew March would be a busy month with the lambing season well under way, but the arrival of his four-month-old son Rory means this year is more hectic than usual.

However, that hasn't stopped him enjoying life on the farm with his other two boys – Thomas, four, and Ben, three.

With some of the lambs on the farm less than one week old, they need plenty of care and attention – something the boys are happy to provide.

The harder work, on the other hand, they tend to leave to their dad.

With lambs being born around the clock, the days can be long and unpredictable but Mr Case, who farms at Plumpton Cottage Farm, said he enjoys the work.

He added: "We are lambing around 1,000 sheep. At the moment we are about a quarter of the way through so we have got a very busy few weeks ahead.

"Our first lambs arrived in about the middle of February and will carry on coming until the end of March. It is our busiest time of year."

And the unpredictable weather is posing its own challenges – even if it does give the lads a good excuse to cuddle the new-born lambs.

Mr Case said: "Cold weather like this is not good for the lambs."

But come rain or shine he is out in the fields taking care of them.

Over the weekend, he said, one of the sheep needed a caesarian section while it was in labour.

He added that the demands of spring mean he needs as much help as he can get.

He said: "It is a very busy time of year and everybody gets stuck in – we are flat out seven days a week."

He also has some vet students who help out during this time of year, getting valuable experience in the process.

Mr Case added: "They learn a bit and help out – it's mutually beneficial really."
