Ulverston club appoints first female member

HISTORY has been made at a South Cumbria club which now has its first lady member.

ANN ALLEN

Ann Allen is the first woman to join the Rotary Club of Ulverston.

The retired managing director of Gyrodata Drilling Automation Ltd, in Barrow, was invited to join the club by her neighbour and fellow Rotarian Mike Wills.

Mrs Allen, 65, of Ulverston, has been appointed as a member of the club’s community and vocational committee, the fellowship and attendance sub-committee, and she soon becomes the new treasurer.

She said: “I’m delighted to have joined.

“I retired about 18 months ago and I started to think that I wanted to do something to help people.

“The Rotary’s aims were what I was looking for. I’m very interested in the charitable work.”

Ian Taylor, president of the Rotary Club of Ulverston, said Mrs Allen is a great asset to the club, and said: “It’s a milestone and we hope we can encourage more ladies to join.”
