Transform old trees into Ulverston hospice cash

RESIDENTS in need of an extra pair of hands in removing old Christmas trees from their homes are in luck, due to the setting up of a new recycling scheme which will help Ulverston St Mary's Hospice.

St Mary’s Hospice is this year running a collection and recycling service, which will eradicate the problems of lifting heavy trees as well as the mess left behind by pine needles.

The charity is asking for residents who make use of the scheme to make a suggested donation of £5, which will go towards providing supportive and palliative care for seriously ill residents in South Cumbria.

Martin Lewis, corporate fundraiser at St Mary’s, said he was hoping the hospice could generate thousands from the scheme.

He said: “This is the first time we have ever done it. One hospice in East Cheshire generated more than £67,000 from a similar scheme.

“If we can get just a fraction of that then it will be a fantastic result. We are hoping to get up to 400 or 500 collections in our first year, which would be brilliant.

“We have had volunteers and businesses dropping off flyers and have already got a lot of collections booked.”

A team of volunteers will collect trees from homes in Furness on Saturday January 11 and Sunday January 12.

They will then take the trees to Crooklands of Dalton to be recycled.

Eighty per cent of the money raised from the scheme will go towards St Mary’s Hospice. The remaining 20 per cent will be shared among other local charities.
