South Cumbria Musical Festival - Young pianists find their forte

FLEET-FINGERED pianists from across the region were in the spotlight on the third day of the South Cumbria Musical Festival.

Day 1: Opening day results
Day 2: Young orators take to Ulverston stage
Day 4: All the young dudes carry the festival tunes
Day 5: Grand finale to excellent South Cumbria Music Festival

Twenty categories were decided during Tuesday’s afternoon and evening sessions at the Coronation Hall in Ulverston.

The festival’s organisers were delighted to secure a Steinway D grand piano this year for the use of all competitors.

Flookburgh’s Lawrence Diffey achieved the highest score of the day with an 88 for his piano solo in the up to, and including, year six class.

The talented pianist followed that with a win in the years four to six classical and romantic solo to earn him the Douglas Poulter Memorial Shield and Bursary prize.

Ben Lewis, of Ulverston, was presented with the Peter Gray Memorial Pianoforte Bursary of £100 and Kendal’s Chloe Lauren Martin received the Julie Wills Piano Bursary of £50.

The prestigious Martyn Tonge Rosebowl Award for a promising competitor in any of the piano classes was awarded to Olivia Smith from Carnforth.

Entrants performed before adjudicator John Foster, who has travelled the world as both an examiner and pianist.

He said there was a lot of good playing on the day, with senior pianists testing themselves on very advanced pieces and the juniors showing real promise.
