On Sunday, audiences enjoyed solos, duets and ensembles in both age restricted and open classes.

Organisers said there was a good attendance by junior brass bands, including Barrow Shipyard Junior Band, Holborn Hill Royal Brass Band, Brasstastic, St. Pius X Brass Band and Kirkby Lonsdale Mini Band.

In the evening they were entertained by South Cumbria Retirement Band and Burneside Brass.

In the junior classes Anna Merrell from Dalton was awarded the Kimberly-Clark Shield and Bursary of £100 for a promising young brass competitor.

Abigail Stanway, 14, from Dalton, was the winner of the SCMF Ball Award and the Clarry Dunlop Shield, both for brass solos.

The Robert J Lacey Memorial Plate for a promising young brass competitor was awarded to Bethany Johnson from Barrow.

SCMF chairman, Keith Butcher, said: “The festival got off to a great start with some lovely brass playing, particularly from new ensemble groups, which is encouraging for the well-being of the brass competition. We are looking forward to the rest of the week continuing the same high standard.”

Tickets for the Gala Evening on Saturday can be bought from the Festival Office in the Coronation Hall or by calling 07773 403686.
