Let me answer these questions.
The name South Lakes Search & Rescue came about as the team is based in South Lakes the team itself except two are based in South Lakes , Simple as that , nothing sinister at all. SLSAR is not a Mountain Rescue Team , we do not go up mountains in any form, we are a swiftwater /flood rescue team which by it very essence contains elements of search & rescue. We believe whole heartedly that that side of things should be left to the professionals such as MR. With the exception of fires, swiftwater and flood events are the most common and widespread of natural disasters and threaten communities across the UK, and case in point our very own county of Cumbria. Swiftwater rescue is a subset of technical rescue dealing in whitewater river conditions and flooding, due to the added pressure of moving water, swiftwater rescue involves the use of specially trained personnel, ropes and mechanical advantage. A specific set of rules govern swiftwater rescues and special equipment and manoeuvres are utilized for the safe retrieval of a person or persons from such a dangerous environment , hence why 14 members of the team are registered swiftwater rescue technicians trained by Rescue Northeast with 6 members also attending a vehicle in water course specifically for flood rescue , 5 members are also leaving shortly to attend a rope rescue technicians course which as you know is an essential part of swiftwater / flood rescue. The team also has 2 paramedics and 3 doctors on board. All of the above qualifications again have been given to CSAR and to Cumbria Fire and Rescue.
In terms of funding please send me your email address (email to : rnicholls@slsar.org.uk) and I will send you quite happily the presentation we gave to all of companies and organizations who have supported us , which clearly states we are as I say the above only. In terms of Insurance, the team is fully insured and these documents are registered with CSAR alongside vehicle insurance and public liability, having said that anyone who asks for competencies and insurance should only ask and I know the management team will give copies to those who ask.
In terms of the management team , I have been in contact with the chairman and the team will be enhanced with new additions to ensure “ housekeeping” and coordination is a top priority. The team itself will continue to train and develop its skills ensuring that they are a constantly capable and qualified team able to assist the emergency services in times of need. This team work extremely hard from their initial swim tests to join to completing SRT1 to further enhancing their skills and I for one am extremely proud of each and every one of them.
SLSAR will continue due to the fact that this is a family unit, one that works together , trains together and all have a firm belief that what we do is required and is of benefit to the community’s in which we live.

Whilst I applaud the motives and enthusiasm of the volunteers of SLSAR, the management team has consistantly demonstrated a lack of judgement when communicating or dealing with other recognised agencies such as Mountain Rescue and the Coastguard resulting in SLSAR not being called out to emergencies. As far as I am aware they originally set themselves up unilaterally as a search and rescue team without any consultation with the two local mountain rescue teams in South Lakeland who have the delegated responsibilty from Cumbria Constabulary for land search and rescue and as a result they are not recognised as a resource because MR does not know their levels of training, insurance, competence3s etc.The very act of naming the team 'South Lakeland Search and Rescue has caused confusion with the public thinking that they carry out land rescue tasks and of course they have aquired significant funding/equipment donations which would perhaps been of more use to the existing volunteer teams in the area. With over 40 years experience in voluntary rescue I can only say how sorry I am for the goodwilled and keen members who have been seriously let down by their team management.

Why have SLSAR STILL not filed their accounts? Thats what Companies House have told me today. If they had filed them, even if they were late, they could have stopped the company being dissolved. But as it stands, Companies House still hasn;t received anything from them.
How come no-one has mentioned the fact that Dalton and Askam 1st responders have broken away from SLSAR..... they want nothing to do with them anymore (from a spokesperson of theirs).
