MAJOR changes to town centre traffic flow in Ulverston will go before the public.

Residents will be asked for their views on plans that would see one-way traffic along Brogden Street reversed.

The proposals have been put forward to improve the traffic situation on market days. Current market day restrictions – which prevent vehicles using certain streets – have a number of exceptions, which police say make them difficult to enforce. In response to complaints from the public, new plans have been put forward.

Ulverston PCSO Paul Harris said: “Concerns have been raised regarding the number of vehicles accessing New Market Street, Market Street and Brogden Street within the restricted period on market days.

“Councillors Peter Hornby and James Airey, with support from Ulverston Town Council, have requested that the prohibition of driving is reviewed and updated to reflect the current needs of the market and Ulverston town as a whole.

“Following consideration of the needs for the market and for the businesses and residents in the area, an option to amend the current restrictions has been drafted by Cumbria Highways.”

The proposals would see New Market Street and Market Street, from King Street to Brogden Street, inaccessible on market days – except for traders and emergency services. Previous concerns over disabled access, which led to the various exceptions to the current restrictions, will be addressed through the reversal of the one-way system on Brogden Street.
