Popular Ulverston club could be given new lease of life

PLANS to revive a popular Ulverston club night may have been given a lifeline.
The Buffers Reunion event, staged at the Coronation Hall last year, was a success, but looked unlikely to return this year.
Campaigners organised a petition to encourage council bosses, who run the hall, to reconsider and have now been granted a meeting to discuss the possibility of bringing the event back to Ulverston.
Although no decision has yet been made, the move offers hope for those pushing for the club night to become a regular feature in the town.
A spokeswoman for South Lakeland District Council confirmed a meeting on the event will take place later this week.
She said officers had been trying to arrange a meeting for a couple of weeks, but had been unable to find a suitable time until now.
The announcement will be welcome news to the people behind an online campaign to bring the event back to Ulverston.
Organisers posted on Facebook earlier in the month, saying they “had to admit defeat” and would look at taking the event to Barrow.
However, the campaign that followed saw more than 100 people sign the petition and now SLDC is apparently prepared to consider hosting the Buffers Reunion for a second time.
The petition states: “After five years of being closed, Buffers returned to Ulverston for one night, which was enjoyed by 700 people without a hitch.
“Help fight the cause and not only save Buffers, but save Ulverston.”
Ulverston resident Barbara Jarvis signed the petition.
She said: “Coronation Hall should be for all age groups, not just the middle and older aged people.
“Last year’s night was a huge success, bringing hundreds of well behaved people into the town who just wanted to have a really good time.”
Matt Messenger, the former Buffers DJ responsible for organising the successful reunion event last year, said he was grateful to the council for arranging the meeting and hoped an agreement could be reached.
The Buffers nightclub was a popular haunt for South Lakes party-goers for two decades, but closed down in 2007.
The Buffers Reunion event at the Coronation Hall attracted 700 people in September 2012.

Out of interest, does anyone know what the former Buffers Club adjacent to Ulverston Station is at the present time? It's not somewhere I have been near for quite a while but it always looked a well-appointed establishment.

This council is a joke. They shutdown Buffers, they shutdown the Roxy, they shutdown the Carnival Night. They won't even allow this sort of event a couple of times a year. If I were a young person in Ulverston, I would leave because there is nothing to do, and the council doesn't care about it.
