Youngsters dressed up as chimney sweeps and work children as part of their Victorian school day.

The re-enactment day for the 52 pupils, from Years 3 to 6, had been planned since the beginning of term to enhance the children’s learning around the subject.

Jane Thedham, Year 3 and 4 teacher, said: “We’ve been studying the Victorian times as a topic since September.”

In the build-up to the Victorian take-over, the children had been researching topics surrounding the era.

The fact that Victorian children had to work was of particular interest to the students.

Mrs Thedham said all the kids loved their role play day.

She said: “All the children got dressed up as work children and the teachers as well.

“The children all just produced the costumes themselves.

“They all looked really good.”

For lessons during the re-enactment the boys and girls were separated to reflect the way children would have been taught in the era.

Archie Brownlee, 10, said: “It was nice to have a change.”

Children also tasted an array of meals inspired from the time, including a bowl of gruel made from porridge for their morning snack and, in true Olivier Twist style, the children had to queue up for their gruel to be dished out by the cook.
