Jess Gillam, 15, has won awards for her skills playing the saxophone but it is her charity work and the concerts she organises that earned her the nomination for the Young Citizen of the Year Award.

The award, sponsored by Siemens, recognises members of the younger generation who make a positive contribution to life in Ulverston.

Barrow resident Dorothy Moody nominated Jess.

Mrs Moody said: “Jess plays a very important role in the town by organising an annual series of concerts, bringing famous musicians to the Coronation Hall.”

Jess recently won the Best Young Musician in the North West award from the Awards for Young Musicians charity.

Jess said she was extremely proud of her recent achievements and delighted to have been nominated for the Young Citizen of the Year Award.

She said: “I really love doing music and through doing music giving something back as well – organising concerts, bringing music that might not otherwise be in Ulverston.

“It is really nice to be able to give something back to the community.”

The Heart of Ulverston Awards 2013 are sponsored by Ulverston Victoria High School and proudly supported by Siemens, GlaxoSmithKline, Furness College and the Evening Mail.
