Dinner to raise cash for Ulverston family

A CUMBRIA country pub is offering a meal where diners decide what to pay – all for a charitable cause.

The General Burgoyne in Great Urswick, near Ulverston, is staging a What’s It Worth? dinner to raise money for a couple near Pennington who are each battling life-threatening illnesses.

The Coulstons’ story is well known, and has touched the hearts of many people in the region. Clare, 38, has been fighting cancer since 2009 while husband, Paul, 39, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2012.

Central to the fundraiser is landlord Craig Sherrington.

He said: “We’ve only ever done one of these before but it was really successful and people enjoyed it.

“That time when we totted up we came out with exactly what we would have if we’d been charging, some people had paid a little bit more, some people a little bit less.

“It’ll be interesting to see how we do when everything’s for charity. It really is a great cause.”

The Coulstons have two children, Finlay, eight, and Evelyn, five.

The General Burgoyne fundraiser will give money to the Pennington Benevolent Fund, which will go towards vital equipment for Mr Coulston and to securing the future of the children.

Mr Sherrington’s wife, Louise Sherrington, said: “We’ve chosen to raise money for that because it’s a very local charity. The couple do come in now and again.

“We’ve got young children as well so it really hits home what they must be going through.”

To accommodate the March 3 charity night, the Sherringtons are opening on the one day of the week they would normally close – Monday.

Staff are working for free, suppliers are not charging for food and Robinsons brewery is supplying the wine. All money taken will go to the fund.

Also on the menu, as well as the gourmet meal, is an appearance by a star guest serving wine. Their identity is still being kept quiet.

The pub is also on the lookout for any entertainers or musicians who want to get involved as well as any raffle prize donations.

For tickets, or if you can help with entertainment or raffle prizes, email dropusaline@generalburgoyne.com or call the General Burgoyne on 01229 586394.
