Crackdown on Furness pub thugs is launched

LICENSEES have vowed to take a zero-tolerance approach on troublesome revellers who are travelling to Ulverston after being barred from pubs in the Barrow area.
Ulverston and District Licensed Vituallers and town Barwatch members are worried by the levels of people banned under Barrow and District Barwatch who are drinking in Ulverston at the weekends.
The publicans say Barrow and Dalton people have been involved in incidents in the town, and LVA and police say just a few weeks ago some disorder involved people from the Barrow Barwatch blacklist.
The town’s Barwatch schemes are now linking up to share information.
Dave Mackenzie, landlord of The Sun Inn, in Market Street, Ulverston, and chairman of Ulverston and District Licensed Vituallers and Barwatch scheme has warned any trouble makers: “We know who you are, and we are watching.”
On behalf of the LVA, he said: “At their monthly meeting on May 2 The Ulverston and District Licensed Vituallers expressed concern at the number of people who have been placed on the Barrow and District Barwatch Scheme coming into Ulverston on a Friday and Saturday.
“Over the last few months there has been a number of incidents involving people from Barrow and Dalton. While the LVA welcome custom into Ulverston they will not tolerate any anti-social behaviour. We have a successful Barwatch Scheme in Ulverston and District and anybody involved in any incidents in or around our public houses will find themselves banned from all 25 public houses who are members of our scheme.”
Sergeant Chris O’Hare, of Ulverston police, said: “There have been some incidents of disorder with people who have been on Barrow Barwatch.
“Historically people do come to Ulverston as a change of scenery, we don’t want disorder to come with it.”
Sgt O’Hare said early intervention in night scene situations, and the use of police dispersal orders, which order people to leave the area, are being used successfully.
There are around 40 people on Barrow Barwatch and around 22 on Ulverston.
Mike Fallon, chairman of Barrow LVA, and a founder member of Barwatch, said the Barrow scheme would work with the Ulverston group.
Mr Fallon said: “We can give them the list of those on Barwatch so they are getting some warning.”
The landlord of Barrow’s Theatre Bar said every licensee has the right not to serve people.
But Mr Fallon said banned people, including those barred in Ulverston, will travel to other places to drink, but he said they do not necessarily go on to cause trouble elsewhere.

Thanks Anon, I live in Barrow and hate the type that you mention. However you can't judge all of Barrow folk by the minority. Most of us are hard working, pleasant, law abiding people. If Barrow and Ulverston pubs work together (instead of assuming that Barrow are the underclass) then perhaps a decent plan of action can be put into place. It is rather offensive being tarred with the same brush as the druggies and criminals!
