Brave Ulverston teen’s wishlist caravan due to open

ALICE Pyne fulfilled a dream of buying a caravan for her charity – and this coming weekend the public will get to see what their fundraising and sponsorship money has helped to achieve.

The inspirational late teenager set up Alice’s Escapes to provide holidays in South Cumbria for seriously ill children.

Alice’s world-famous bucket list included her wish to have a caravan for her charity, so there is always somewhere for the families to stay, even through the busy holiday periods when hotels and other accommodation can be full.

Team Alice challengers, and their supporters, helped to fundraise for the caravan through events such as the Keswick to Barrow walk, Kilimanjaro climb and other events.

The courageous 17-year-old died in January after fighting Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a cancer that affects the lymphatic system, for more than five years. Less than a fortnight after Alice’s death her caravan arrived in her home town of Ulverston at Bardsea Leisure Park.

On Saturday invited guests will attend the grand opening of the caravan, which is being named Mabel’s Place after Alice’s beloved pet dog.

Barrow and Furness MP, John Woodcock, who is a friend of the family and Team Alice member, will open the caravan.

On Sunday there is an open day for the public to view the caravan, and meet the Alice’s Escapes team, between 11am and 3pm. It also enables businesses interested in offering experiences and family accommodation to learn more.

Cathy Broomfield, a trustee of Alice’s Escapes and family friend, said: “Mabel was Alice’s canine best friend, and Mabel’s Place just seemed a natural name for the caravan.”

l Tomorrow Barrow Sixth Form College is holding an Anthony Nolan charity recruitment event in memory of Alice. The event will take place from 11am to 2pm, and anyone aged 16 to 30 is encouraged to sign up.
