VIRTUOSITY was the order of the day at a musical festival as young instrumentalists stepped up to perform.

Yesterday, day four of the South Cumbria Musical Festival gave the stage to players of the violin, recorder and woodwind instruments.

The morning session held at Ulverston's Coronation Hall saw a mixture of solo and duet performances from a wide range of genres.

As always the classics were well represented. Hollie Clunie from Millom tackled the allegro from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, written by the great Mozart. Hollie was the winner of recorder solo category.

Jessica Hartley from Seathwaite played a waltz by Czech composer Antonin Dvorak, and Kate Moore, of Ravenglass played one of the most recognisable piece of music of the past century – the them from The Pink Panther.

James Kirby continued as adjudicator after overseeing the piano session on Tuesday.

The renowned musician commented on the enthusiasm shown by the performers taking part.

There were a range of performers from schools across the area taking part, with competitors up to year 13 taking part, including a mother and daughter duet.

Members of the committee very much enjoyed the music making class, to which various local school groups were invited to.

During the afternoon, the string performers got up the pluck to play their chosen pieces.

The musicians played works ranging from Beethoven, to Bach, to more contemporary work composed by John Williams, of Star Wars and Jurrasic Park fame.

The Instrumental Bursary & Cumbria Crystal Loving Cup for a promising solo instrumentalist was awarded to Andrew Bell from Cartmel.

Tiegan Lowthian from Kirkby Thore was awarded The Barrow Soroptimists Instrumental Trophy.

The festival continues today (6) with the youth vocalist and children's choir categories.

It is the penultimate day of the festival, with only the adult vocalist and choir groups to come on Friday.

The fantastic week of performances will come to a close on Saturday with the gala performance, held at Coronation Hall.
