THE future of Ulverston's Coronation Hall has been handed a boost after volunteers stepped forward to lend a hand.

Ulverston Community Enterprises took over the management of the Coronation Hall from South Lakeland District Council in August last year.

After holding a taster session at the hall, the management was thrilled when 30 people came forward as volunteers.

UCE chief executive Charlie Rowley said: "Staff who operate the hall are being increasingly stretched by the growing demand for the Coro’s facilities. As UCE works to promote the hall and widen its role with more professional shows and community events, that pressure is going to increase. We have been delighted with the response so far from volunteers prepared to give a little of their time to ensure the Coro is here for future generations to enjoy."

With the help of the group of volunteers the hall will have more scope to develop as an arts space, and cement itself as a hub in the community.

So far the trainees have been developing the essential "front of house" skills needed to smoothly run the hall's box office, or to steward audiences.

As well as the day-to-day running of the hall, the local knowledge of the town possessed by the volunteers will let them act as unofficial tour guides for Ulverston.

Linda Wood and Pat Timewell, both from Ulverston, who were already members of the Friends of the Coro society, decided to take the next logical step and increase their involvement at the venue.

Mrs Timewell said: "Having been involved with the Coro for so long and enjoyed so many wonderful productions and events in the hall, it seemed only right that I should volunteer and give something back.”

Mrs Wood added: "The Coronation Hall is a wonderful asset for Ulverston and if it is to thrive in the future, it needs the support of everyone in the town, so I was happy to offer my help."

The UCE is still taking on extra volunteers and has encouraged anyone interested in making the hall a success to come forward.

Julie Hammerton, a board director at UCE and manager of the volunteer programme, said: "We would be happy to hear from anyone who would like to find out more about the opportunities that are available."
